What is a FLEX account?
The Flexible Spending Account, or FLEX, is a pre-paid debit feature available on your DukeCard. After opening an account, you can use your DukeCard to pay for textbooks, school and office supplies, laundry services, phone and cable TV bills, vending snacks, food at campus eateries, a recreation center workout and much more.

Do I need a separate card for FLEX?
No. FLEX is a free feature of the DukeCard that you carry for identification.

Can I add money to my account online?
Yes. The most convenient option is to deposit money in your FLEX account through online payroll deduction, or, if you’re a student, through the Bursar’s Office. If you’re an employee and don’t have online access, fill out a payroll deduction form at a DukeCard office. Click here for more information about depositing funds online.

How does payroll deduction work?
Whether you choose online payroll deduction or visit the DukeCard office to fill out a payroll deduction form, you get to pick an amount you want deducted from your bi-weekly or monthly paycheck. That amount is deducted during the last pay period of each month and credited to your FLEX account by the first business day of the following month. The minimum payroll deduction is $10; maximum, $100.

Can I add money to my FLEX account at DukeCard offices?
Yes. Cash, check or debit card are accepted at the DukeCard offices, which are at Room 100 West Union Building on West Campus or Room 0100 Facilities Center off Coal Pile Drive. If you make a deposit by mail, only checks are accepted.

What other options are available for FLEX deposits?
You can deposit money and check your balance at Value Transfer Stations (VTS). There are 15 of these free-standing machines at the university and health system. They only accept cash.

That’s not all. There are five Express Stations that accept debit cards for deposits. These stations allow you to check balances and see Duke Dining Services’ locations, including hours. Debit cards are accepted at the kiosks.

Can I view my account statement online?
Yes. You can see your balance and view activity, including date, location and transaction amount here .

Can I receive a printed account statement?
Yes. However, as part of Duke’s Greening Initiative, you can choose to discontinue receiving monthly printed statements.

What if I lose my DukeCard – what happens to the money in my account?
You can suspend your account online here. Your account will also be protected when you call the DukeCard office immediately at (919) 684-5800 if your card is lost or stolen. The office is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Your card will be instantly deactivated. When you get a new card, your FLEX account will be available automatically.

Do I get a refund if I close my FLEX account?
Yes. Refunds for employees are issued by check; student refunds are credited to the Bursar’s Office.
